How to Make Moist Snuff

Grind dried tobacco leaves into homemade snuff.

Snuff is a variety of smokeless tobacco taken in through the nose. Snuff isn't often seen in modern society, but some still enjoy emulating yesterday's socialites. Not only is snuff elegant, when taken properly, it's also acceptable in areas and events where smoking is prohibited. Though commercial snuff blends are relatively expensive, you can create your own mixes at home. Moist snuff mixes clump easily and don't create a mess when you take them. They also hold onto added scents longer than dry varieties.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose high-quality tobacco leaves for your snuff, as snuff tobacco enters your body directly and isn't burned first. High-quality leaves, like young Virginia tobacco leaves, produce fine, aromatic snuff.

    • 2

Gently twist the top of your snuff grinder (available at tobacco stores) to the left and lift it upward. Add about ½ cup of dried tobacco leaves to the grinder and twist the top back into place.

    • 3

Grip the knob on the top of the grinder and turn it vigorously for about 1 minute. Twist the top off of the grinder; you should see a mound of fine tobacco powder. Pour the powder into a small bowl.

    • 4

Add about ½ tsp. each of ammonia, dried hellebore and pearl ash to a second small bowl. Stir the three ingredients together. These ingredients, available at tobacco stores, keep your snuff moist and give it a high aroma.

    • 5

Add 1 1/2 tsp. of snuff powder to the moisture mix. Stir them together with a spoon until well mixed. The tobacco should be moist and sticky, but not soaked or soggy. Add more tobacco, a pinch at a time, until you get the right consistency.

    • 6

Add another ½ tsp. of each moisture ingredient and more tobacco until all the snuff is mixed and moistened. Gently scrape the snuff from the bowl and into a small snuff box.
