Nicely polished toes can add the finishing touch to your overall look. Polishing your toenails seems easy, but if it is done incorrectly, you can end up with smudges and polish that chips and cracks. 1
Wear toe separators while polishing your toenails and remove them once your polish has fully dried. Toe separators keep your toes apart so your nail polish does not smudge or smear.
-
2
Give your toenail polish sufficient time to dry because wet polish can smear easily. Allow at least 20 minutes of drying time while you sit still and avoid walking around. Do not put on socks or slippers. If you are in a rush, use a quick-dry polish, or soak your toenails in cold water to speed up the drying time.

3
Apply a clear topcoat over your nail polish to protect it from chipping and cracking and to make your polish extra shiny. A topcoat also acts as a barrier that keeps water away from your polish. Water can fade and dull the color of your nail polish.
-
4
Reapply the topcoat every two to three days to keep your polish shiny. Use a fast-dry topcoat if you are in a rush.
-
5
Moisturize your toes daily to keep your nails and polish from flaking, splitting or chipping. Always moisturize after showering or water exposure, because water has a drying effect on your nails.
-
6
Wear open-toed shoes that expose your nails and give them some breathing room. Avoid wearing shoes that are too tight. Put on stockings or socks if you wear shoes that fully cover your toes. Otherwise, friction between your toenails and the shoes can cause your nail polish to chip and crack.
