How to Get Insurance in Florida When Your Spouse Has a Suspended License

Financial responsibility is mandatory for all drivers who operate a vehicle on Florida roads at least 90 days a year. Although drivers can meet financial responsibility requirements by purchasing a $350,000 bond, most drivers fulfill Florida's requirements by purchasing auto insurance. Florida auto insurance policies cover all household drivers unless you and the insurance company agree in writing to exclude a particular driver. If your spouse has a suspended driver's license, you can still obtain auto insurance in Florida.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact an insurance company authorized to provide auto insurance in Florida. You can check whether a particular company is licensed in Florida by visiting the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation website (see Resources). Alternatively, contact an insurance agent or broker in Florida.

    • 2

Complete the insurance company's auto insurance application. You must provide information about your spouse, including his suspended driver's license number and the date he will regain driving privileges, if available.

    • 3

Read and sign the company's driver exclusion form, which lists your spouse as an excluded driver. Auto insurance companies in Florida must obtain written consent from policyholders to exclude a household member from coverage. Obtain a copy of the signed driver exclusion form for your records.

    • 4

Pay the required down payment and submit your insurance application. If you work through an agent or broker, she will handle submitting your application for you.

    • 5

Obtain a copy of the declarations page from the company, agent or broker once the application is approved and the down payment accepted. The declarations page shows the coverage start and end dates, as well as coverage types and limits. Keep the declarations page in your vehicle until you receive your identification cards from the company.

    • 6

Provide a copy of the declarations to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles branch office if necessary to register your vehicle or renew your driver's license.

Tips & Warnings

  • Contact your insurance company when your spouse is eligible to restore driving privileges. You will need to add your spouse to the auto insurance policy before the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles can lift the license suspension.

  • Avoid allowing your spouse to operate any vehicle until he restores his driving privileges and you add him to your auto insurance policy. A signed driver exclusion form relieves your insurance company of liability for any damages that occur while the excluded driver operates a vehicle.
