How to Decorate Wooden Letters With Pictures

Decorated wooden letters make a strong statement in any decor style. Decorating wooden letters with pictures allows you to customize any letter to any style and achieve different effects with the same letters. Choose cartoon characters to spell out a name for a child's room, pictures of food for a kitchen decoration, or antique pictures in sepia tones for a formal sitting room.

Things You'll Need

  • Old magazines
  • Scissors
  • Craft glue
  • Varnish (optional)
  • Cut out pictures from old magazines, comics or books. Experiment with the layout of the pictures on the wooden letter until you find an arrangement that you like.

  • Apply a thin coat of craft glue to the back of the picture and to the area on the wooden letter where the picture will fit. Press the picture into the glue on the wood letter, using your fingers to smooth out any air bubbles, paying particular attention to the edges of the picture.

  • Glue the remaining pictures onto your wooden letter in the same way until the letter is completely covered. You can overlap the pictures or arrange them side by side. Set the decorated letter aside until the glue has dried.

  • Thin down the craft glue with one part water to three parts glue. Paint the thinned glue over the surface of the decorated letter, then set it aside to dry.

Tips & Warnings

  • Apply several coats of varnish if you would like a smooth glossy effect.
  • Any craft glue that dries clear is suitable for decoupage work.
