How to Replace a Harman Ignitor

Harman is a company that manufactures both wood-burning and gas-powered fireplace inserts. The gas-powered inserts, like the Shadow Light XL, are connected to gas outlets in the home and are lit by an electric ignitor. Due to common wear and tear the Harman fireplace insert ignitor sometimes goes bad. Harman sells replacement ignitors; these ignitors can be removed and replaced using a few common household tools. It takes approximately an hour to switch out the ignitor.

Things You'll Need

  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • Replacement ignitor
  • Shut off the gas supply to the fireplace insert.

  • Shut off the electric power to the fireplace from the breaker box.

  • Remove the front grill panel at the bottom front of the fireplace insert by pulling the latches out and sliding the bottom of the door out about three inches. Lift the door up off its hinges and set it aside.

  • Locate the ignitor. It is the second knob at the far left-hand side of the control panel at the bottom front.

  • Use a screwdriver to remove the two screws holding the old ignitor in place and pull it forward. Untwine the red and blue wires from the wiring inside the unit by hand and pull the old ignitor out.

  • Connect the red wire on the new ignitor to the red wire inside the unit. Connect the blue wire on the new ignitor to the blue wire inside the unit. Twist the wires together by hand.

  • Slide the new ignitor button back into place on the face of the unit and replace the two screws to hold it in place.

  • Slide the latches at the bottom of the grill cover door back on its hinges and then push it forward until it latches into place. Close the grill cover door.

  • Restore the power and gas supply line back to the Harman fireplace insert.
