Replace the fuel filter on your outboard motorboat to ensure peak performance.

Johnson Outboard has been building outboard motors for the better part of a century. The company was founded when four brothers in Terre Haute, Indiana agreed to build a small engine to power their small boat to their favorite fishing spot. Johnson outboard motors, like all motors, require regular maintenance and repair to keep them running correctly. Fixing the outboard motor's fuel filter is required to keep the engine running smoothly and efficiently.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the fuel line from the external fuel tank that runs to the engine. Open and remove the engine cover and set it aside.

    • 2

Locate the fuel pump. It is most often on the right side of the engine. Depending on the model and size of the engine you are working with, it may be in a slightly different position. Most Johnson outboard motors do have the fuel pump on the right side though. The fuel filter will be just under the fuel pump.

    • 3

Unscrew the single screw that holds the filter in place. The screw will loosen but will not come out. Loosen it until the cover is released just enough to allow you to access the filter. A small amount of gas that is in the line may leak out, this is normal. To avoid this turn the engine on after you have disconnected the fuel line from the tank and let the engine run until the gas in the line is used.

    • 4

Remove the old filter from the assembly and discard. Insert the replacement filter and reconnect the inlet cover by tightening the screw.

    • 5

Attach the fuel line, squeeze the primer bulb a few times to send gas to the engine and start the engine as you normally would. Carefully inspect the fuel pump assembly and look for any leaks from where you just replaced the filter. Once you have determined the filter is correctly installed and not leaking. Replace the engine cover, and you are ready to get back out on the water.
