How to Make a Hanging Lamp Out of a Barrel Shade

Hanging lamps add illumination to areas above furniture and in corners. The lamps are hung from hooks placed in the ceiling. The long chain attached to the hanging lamp plugs into an electrical outlet close to the desired location. Recycled barrel shades make ideal hanging lamps. The conversion of a barrel shade to a hanging lamp is a simple task when using a universal swag kit. The process takes approximately 30 minutes from start to finish.

Insert the threaded lamp nipple into the hole in the top center of the barrel shade frame. Twist the threaded lamp nipple through the center hole in the shade frame until approximately half of the nipple is exposed past the bottom of the frame. The threaded lamp nipple looks like a piece of pipe that is threaded from top to bottom.

Insert the two exposed ends of the wire through the threaded lamp nipple and the top cap to the light socket. Slide the casing off the light socket. Loop one wire around each of the two screw posts. Tighten the screws around the wire so it does not move. Slide the casing back on the light socket.

Snap or twist the top cap into place. Screw the top cap to the bottom of the lamp nipple.

    • 4

Screw a light bulb in the light socket. Hang the lamp.
