The books which form the Old Testament of the Bible are called the "Torah" in the the Jewish faith. The books were written on thick scrolls of paper rolled up horizontally from the sides into the center. Certain books of the Torah were -- and still are -- read on Jewish religious holidays, such as the scroll of the Book of Esther, which is read on the festival of Purim. Having children recreate a simple Torah scroll as a craft, will help them appreciate the history and work that went into creating it.
Step 1
Ask a rabbi or scribe to show your group of children a life-size scroll from the Torah, so the children can see what it looks like up close and in detail. Talk about the time and incredible attention to detail that scribes put into copying the Torah onto scrolls for use in synagogues.

Step 2
Give five sheets of parchment paper to each child. Ask children to draw pictures of biblical scenes from the Torah, such as images of David and Goliath, Samson and the Philistines, Moses and the Red Sea or Noah and the ark.
Step 3
Line sheets up side to side in a row and staple them together. Tape each end sheet to a small wooden dowel rod. Roll the rods towards each other, rolling up the parchment sheets as you go. Let children carry their scroll with them to show their parents and other members of the congregation.
