How to Preserve Rabbit Pelts
Whether you hunt or you raise your own rabbits for meat, rabbit pelts are a resource that you should not pass up. Rabbit pelts are very soft and can be used to make small items like gloves or hats, or they may be cut into strips and used to adorn or supplement other projects. Preserving rabbit pelts is a straightforward task that can be accomplished at home.

Spread the rabbit pelt fur side down on a flat surface. piece of plywood or a broad board.

Scrape any remaining bits of flesh or membrane off of the inside of the pelt using a sharp knife. Work carefully to avoid puncturing the skin.

Trim away any ragged edges from the pelt using the sharp knife.

Spread the rabbit pelt fur side down on a piece of plywood or a broad board.

Tack the rabbit pelt to the board by using a hammer to push nails through the pelt, affixing it to the wood. The rabbit pelt should be stretched but not straining.

Sprinkle a thick layer of salt over the rabbit pelt, using between 1 to 2 lbs. salt. The salt draws out the moisture, to dry the pelt.

Set the board aside, lying it flat or using a small object to give one end an elevation of 1 to 2 inches. A slight incline allows the moisture to drain away more quickly.

Leave the board alone for 2 weeks in a cool, dry place. After 2 weeks, the pelt is thoroughly preserved.
