While the Amazon Kindle is a useful e-book reader, only the Kindle Fire doubles as a tablet, giving you full access to Web pages and features, such as Chat. You can download several apps that enable you to chat with your friends, provided you have Internet access. The Facebook app enables you to chat with Facebook friends who are online. Trillian supports chatting with anyone who has one of several IM accounts, including Google or MSN. You link your accounts to your Trillian account. WhatsApp Messenger supports chats with other WhatsApp users, no matter what platform they use. All three apps are free.
