How to Change the Page Background Color for a Wordpress Default Theme

Save

Twenty Ten, the default theme included with WordPress, displays your website with a plain white background by default. However, the theme's creators included an option for you to customize your website by using an image as your background. You can also configure your website to display a solid color instead of white. You can access these options through the "Appearance" menu on the WordPress dashboard.

Using an Image File as Your Background

  • Click the "Appearance" heading on the dashboard of your WordPress website to expand the menu. Click the "Background" link.

  • Click the "Choose File" button. Find the image file on your computer, and double-click it.

  • Click the "Upload" button to transfer the file to your website. The preview field at the top of the page shows what the background image will look like when you are finished.

  • Click the "Left," "Center" or "Right" radio button next to "Position" to select the orientation of the background image.

  • Click the "No Repeat," "Tile," "Tile Horizontally," or "Tile Vertically" button to indicate whether WordPress should repeat the background image on pages that are larger than the image that you have uploaded.

  • Click the "Scroll" radio button if you would like the image to scroll with the text of your website when readers scroll down pages, or click "Fixed" if you would the image to remain in the same place while text scrolls.

  • Click the "Save Changes" button.

Using a Solid Color as Your Background

  • Click the "Appearance" heading on the dashboard of your WordPress website to expand the menu. Click the "Background" link.

  • Click the "Select a Color" link. A color wheel appears on the bottom of the page.

  • Click the color on the color wheel that you would like to use as the background color for your website.

  • Click the "Save Changes" button.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can use a background image and solid background color simultaneously with the Twenty Ten WordPress theme. Visitors will see the solid color behind the background image if you select the "No Repeat" tiling option.
  • Click the "Remove Background Image" button if you upload a background image and then decide you do not want to use it.
