Instructions

    • 1

Slice a thin piece off the bottom of the watermelon with a knife to create a flat, stable base that sits level on your table or work surface.

    • 2

Draw the cutting outlines on the top of your watermelon with a pencil. Draw two small circles for eyes near one narrow end. Add a small round circle for the blow hole above the eyes toward the center of the watermelon. Draw a slightly curved line just past the blow hole toward the center of the watermelon, joined to two zig-zagged lines near each long edge of the watermelon. Extend the long side lines into a tail, curving from the opposite small oval end of the watermelon into the center. The cutting lines should all connect when you're finished to create an opening with the tail curving into it when cut.

    • 3

Cut the traced lines you drew on the top of the watermelon with a sharp carving knife or utility knife. Cut a rough outline first and then add the details as if you were carving a jack-o'-lantern. Do not cut the eyes out of the watermelon. Remove the watermelon rind as you cut.

    • 4

Punch an apple corer through the rind of the watermelon near the narrow end, opposite the tail, to make eyes on either side.

    • 5

Scoop the watermelon flesh out of the whale bowl with a melon baller or spoon, reserving to mix it with the fruit salad.

    • 6

Turn the watermelon whale gently on its side to drain excess juice into a sink. Place it right side up again.

    • 7

Punch several holes in the bottom of the watermelon whale carving with an apple corer or sharp knife to create drainage holes. The excess juices from the watermelon and fruit salad will drain to keep the whale bottom from getting soggy.

    • 8

Place the watermelon whale into a large roasting pan and fill the pan with ice to keep the fruit cool.

    • 9

Insert a long piece of celery with leaves still intact into the blow hole to represent shooting water.

    • 10

Fill the watermelon whale with fruit salad and serve.
