How to Open Ports on a Linksys Wireless G Router
Ports are the gateways through which other computers or servers communicate with your computer. If the expected port is closed, then communication is disallowed. Some programs, such as games or peer-to-peer programs, require certain ports to be open to effectively use all their features. Opening the ports in your Linksys Wireless G router allows other computers to bypass the router's built-in firewall to permit two-way communication.

Connect to your Linksys Wireless G router via an Ethernet cable from one of the numbered ports on the router to your computer's Ethernet port, or via your wireless connection.

Open your Internet browser, type "http://192.168.1.1" -- without the quotes -- in the address bar and press "Enter." Enter your login details when prompted. If you haven't changed these details, enter "admin" for both the username and password.

Click the "Security" tab in the Linksys administration screen, uncheck "Block Anonymous Internet Requests" and click "Save Settings.

Click the "Applications & Gaming" tab and click the "Port Range Forward" sub-tab.

Type a descriptive name under the "Application" column. This name is inconsequential, but should remind you why this port is open.

Enter the start and ending range to open all ports between and including those port numbers. If you wish to open a single port, enter the same number for each.

Click the drop-down menu under "Protocol" and select the appropriate protocol. If you are unsure of the protocol, select "Both."

Enter the IP address of your computer to where the open port should forward.

Check "Enable."

Click "Save Settings."

Opening ports creates a security hole, so only open ports when required and uncheck "enable" when they are not specifically in use.
