How to Group Together Layers in GIMP

The GIMP image editor uses layers as a way to separate portions of a complex image. Each layer can be thought of as a transparency. When multiple transparencies are stacked together, a new image is created. You can group, or link, multiple layers together to perform a single operation, such as moving, resizing or rotating, on all of the layers at once. You can only have a single group of linked layers in one image.

Instructions

    • 1

      Open the GIMP image editor.

    • 2

Click the "Open as Layers" option under the "File" menu to add layers to the image.

    • 3

Click on the "Link" icon next to each layer in the Layers dialog to link the layers together. The "Link" icon looks like a chain link and is located between the "Eye" icon and the thumbnail image of the layer.
