How to Log a Chat on Facebook

Log your Facebook chats with a free add-on for Mozilla Firefox.

Chat logs are useful for remembering exactly how an online conversation transpired or to pull up information shared in an instant message or chat room. However, as of May 2011, Facebook Chat does not support saving chat logs. Only a small bit of recent conversations are saved when you reopen a recent conversation on Facebook Chat. There is a way to save Facebook Chat logs, but you will have to use Mozilla Firefox as your Internet browser. A free Firefox add-on called Facebook Chat History Manager will save all conversations from Facebook Chat.

Instructions

1. Open Mozilla Firefox and visit the download page for the Facebook Chat History Manager add-on.

2. Click the "Add to Firefox" button to install the add-on.

3. Click the "Install Now" button to complete the installation of Facebook Chat History Manager.

4. Close Mozilla Firefox and reopen it to complete the installation.

5. Click "Tools," and then mouse over "Facebook Chat History Manager." Select "Create Account."

6. Allow Facebook Chat History Manager to access your Facebook. Enter a user name and password in the next prompt that appears. This does not have to be your Facebook login; it is a password for keeping your chat logs protected.

7. Click "Tools" > "Facebook Chat History Manager" > "View History" to view your Facebook Chat logs at any time. You will have to log in to the account you just created to view the chat logs.
