How to Redirect Blogspot to a Domain

Blogger, a popular blogging platform owned by Google, offers its users a variety of tools to make blog publishing easier. The default configuration is to host your blog on a blogspot.com sub-domain, but you can redirect your blog to your own domain to further customize the website. This approach, combined with a custom template, eliminates the "standard" look of a Blogger blog. You can purchase a domain directly from Blogger and it will be integrated with your blog automatically, or you can purchase a domain from another registrar or use one that you already own. Several settings need to be tweaked to redirect your Blogspot blog to your domain.

Instructions

    • 1

Open a Web browser and log in to your domain registrar's website. Navigate to your control panel and locate the "DNS" or "Domain Name System" settings. The exact location varies with each registrar.

    • 2

Click the option to alter the "CNAME." Type "www" into the "Name" field. Type "ghs.google.com" into the "Host Name" field. Save the new settings.

    • 3

Click the option to modify the "A Record" settings. Type your domain name in the field provided but don't type the "www" prefix -- for example, "mysite.com." Use the options provided to create four "A" records" and enter the following IP addresses, one per record:

      216.239.32.21

      216.239.34.21

      216.239.36.21

      216.239.38.21

    • 4

Save your "A Record' settings. Wait approximately one hour for the new DNS settings to take effect.

    • 5

Log in to your Blogger account and click on the "Settings" tab. Click the "Publishing" tab below it.

    • 6

Click the "Custom Domain" link. Enter your website's address, including the "www" portion, in the field provided. Click "Save Settings" at the bottom of the page.

Tips & Warnings

  • Blogger displays a warning message if the DNS settings have not updated yet during the setup process in the "Publishing" tab.

  • The DNS settings take time to update across the Internet. If your Blogger blog is not redirecting to your domain, wait 24 to 48 hours before contacting your registrar.
