How to Create a Daily Work Log
Employee hours are an intangible expense that are crucial to determining productivity. Companies track these hours by creating and maintaining daily work logs. The logs work in one of two ways. Either an employee tracks his hours or the manager does so for him. This is accomplished by using a daily work log. The daily work log tracks the date of the work, time started, time ended and duration. By comparing the results of the work log to employee salary, the company can approximate its expense.

1
Draw four columns on a piece of paper or spreadsheet program. Make them wide enough so that they extend horizontally across the entire length of the page.
-
2
Draw horizontal lines at even increments down the length of the page. You now have four columns and several rows extending across and down the page.

3
Insert headers in the top row. Title the first "Date," the second "Time Started," the third "Time Finished" and the fourth "Total Time" or "Duration." Make these headings stand out from the rest of the text. Use bold font, different colors or all capital letters.

Fill in the work log. Keep the entries consistent. If you write out the full dates (e.g., May 27, 2011), do so for the entire log. If you abbreviate hours (e.g, 12 hrs), keep it consistent throughout.
