Use Movie Maker to edit your home movies.

Window Live Movie Maker is a free application that Microsoft offers to Vista and Windows 7 users. Movie Maker allows you to trim a video clip on your computer to use only the scenes that you want. You can then combine various trimmed clips into a longer movie. Though the application is fairly user-friendly, a few pointers will help you start cutting up clips like a pro.

Instructions

    • 1

Launch Windows Live Movie Maker and click "Add videos and photos" from the "Home" tab.

    • 2

Browse to the location of the video file you wish to edit and double-click it to open it. Your video clip will open as a series of images in line to give you a visual bearing of where you are in the clip.

    • 3

Click anywhere in the clip at the beginning of the place you want to cut. You will cut the portion that you want to use, leaving the portion you want to remove behind.

    • 4

Click ''Video Tools" from the toolbar and click "Edit." Click "Trim" to open a preview of the video you wish to trim.

    • 5

Slide the start and end points to the beginning and end of the portion of the video you wish to keep. Click "Play" to view a preview of the clip. Click "Save File" to save your new trimmed clip.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can effectively cut a portion in the center of the clip by trimming a clip before and after the part you wish to remove. Open the two trimmed clips and drag them next to each other to put them back together without the center portion.
