How to Make a Word Mosaic

Create your own digital or traditional word mosaic to decorate the pages of your blog or the walls in your home. Alter the background and tile material for traditional, handmade word mosaics to create a variety of designs. Use letter tiles from an old board game or make your own by writing letters onto ceramic mosaic tiles with a paint pen. Fabric, glass, large ceramic tiles and cardboard are options for the background of your word mosaic.

Instructions

  1. Traditional

    • 1

Tape a design template for the word mosaic outline onto a piece of foam board. Trace around the outline with a pencil. Cut the shape from the foam board with a craft knife.

    • 2

Paint the front of the foam board with acrylic or spray paint in the desired background color for the word mosaic. Let the paint dry. Apply a second coat of paint as needed.

    • 3

Arrange letter tiles around the border of the painted board. One inexpensive way to make letter tiles is to cut out letters from a magazine and glue them to small pieces of cardboard using a glue stick. If you make your own, you can alter the size and design of each letter and each tile. Mosaic tiles are less than 2 inches square.

    • 4

Glue the letter tiles to the foam board with one-part epoxy adhesive. If you are gluing lightweight cardboard letter tiles, a glue stick will work.

    • 5

Arrange the letter tiles to make words inside the perimeter design as you like. Follow the perimeter outline to make rows of words that follow the design, or make the words vertically. Place the letter tiles as close together as possible, or leave spaces between the words in the center. The design of the word mosaic is subjective, as long as you fill in the open space inside the perimeter with words.

    • 6

Glue the tiles in place. Let the glue dry for up to 24 hours.
