How to Insert Emoticons in Facebook Comments

With the use of emoticons, Facebook users can convey an emotion with just a simple symbol. While the process is very simple, the steps are dependent on which type of computer you use. If you have a PC, you can use a combination of keys on your keyboard to create an emoticon. If you have a Mac, for the most part you'll have to rely on an outside site to provide Facebook-ready emoticons that you can use in status updates and comments.

Instructions

  1. PC Users

    • 1

      View the alt codes at AltCodes.org or another emoticon alt code site. View the code for the emoticon you wish to use. For example, if you wish to create a happy face in your Facebook comment, you'll the alt code is to press the "Alt" button and "1" at the same time.

      Log in to Facebook with your username and password.

      Navigate to the posting you wish to comment on. Type in your comment. Do not click "Share."

      Type in the alt code -- so if you wanted a happy face, press "Alt" and "1" at the same time. Click "Share." The emoticon should now appear in your comment.

    Mac Users

      Navigate to http://facebook-symbols.com/characters/, scroll down and choose the emoticon you wish to use.

      Click on the desired emoticon and press "Edit" and then "Copy" to copy the emoticon image.

      Log in to Facebook with your username and password.

      Navigate to the posting you wish to comment on. Type in your comment and do not press "Share."

      Press Edit and then Paste to paste the emoticon you copied to the comment box. Your emoticon should now appear in the comment box. Click "Share" or "Enter" to complete the comment.

Tips & Warnings

  • While Mac users can not use alt codes, there is one shortcut they can use: press "<3" in a comment or status box to place a heart emoticon in the comment or status.
