How to Tailor a Graduation Gown

Tailor your gown to get the best fit possible.

Sometimes a graduate has no size choice when it comes to her graduation gown. Many of these gowns are one size fits most, and if you are petite, there will be a lot of excess fabric. Tailoring the gown to fit better is possible, while keeping the classic graduation gown look. Keep in mind that some schools have strict guidelines about how the gown should look and may not allow much tailoring. This is especially true if you have to give the gown back.

Instructions

    • 1

Have the graduate put the gown on over the clothes to be worn on graduation day. Pay special attention to the hem and sleeve lengths. The gown hem should hit between just below the knee and mid-calf. Sleeves should not cover the hands.

    • 2

Pin up the hem to the correct length. Do this with the sleeve hem as well, if necessary.

    • 3

Measure to make sure the hems are the same length all the way around. Sew the hems into place.

    • 4

Test fit the gown and check for hem accuracy.

Tips & Warnings

  • The gown is supposed to be loose and flowing, so do not tailor the gown to fit tightly.
