How to Put RTF Books on Kindle 2

Amazon's Kindle e-book reader does not directly support the common Rich Text Format, but Amazon does provide a free service that can convert documents in several different formats, including RTF, to the Kindle AZW format. Each Kindle is assigned an individual email address, and documents sent as attachments to this address are converted to AZW and sent to the Kindle. The first time you use this method, you'll have to set up a few things using your Web browser, but after that, you can simply email RTF documents to your Kindle as you would to another person.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit the Manage Your Kindle page. (See References.) Log in with your email address and password.

    • 2

Click the "Edit" link next to your Kindle's name. Enter whatever user name you want in the "Kindle Email Address" field, then click "Update Information."

    • 3

Check the "Your Kindle Approved E-Mail List" section for the email address you primarily use. If it's not there, enter it in the "E-mail address" field and click "Add Address."

    • 4

Attach your RTF file to an email addressed either to username@kindle.com or username@free.kindle.com. No matter which address you use, Amazon will first try and deliver the file to your Kindle for free over a Wi-Fi connection --- you can set up your Kindle's Wi-Fi via its "Settings" menu. If you use the "kindle.com" address and your Kindle is not connected to a Wi-Fi network when you send the email, the file will be delivered over the 3G mobile phone network for a small fee no matter where you are. Using the "free.kindle.com" address will disallow the 3G transfer and ensure you won't be charged, but you'll have to connect your Kindle to a network.

Wait a few moments --- the transfer can take a little while, depending on the size of the file. When it's done, you'll get a confirmation email, and the file will appear on your Kindle next time you turn it on.
