How to Use Moon Sand on Paper

Use paper rolls to protect your table's surface.

Moon sand is a toy product that children use to sculpt forms. Unlike regular sand, moon sand does not fall apart during use due to a non-toxic coating it contains. In order to prevent a potentially large mess, the company that makes moon sand recommends using a protective layer over the table or floor where it will be in use. Using moon sand on paper is one option for a protective layer.

Things You'll Need

• Paper roll
• Masking tape

Instructions

1. Spread a roll of paper out over the table or floor. Cut the paper free from the roll when you have the right amount for your use.

2. Place a strip of masking tape at either end of the paper to secure it into place.

3. Apply another layer of paper for a wider play area. Make sure it overlaps the original paper strip by several inches. Tape the two sheets together along the seam; tape the edges down as well.

4. Spread the moon sand out on the surface for the children to shape and mold.

Tips & Warnings

• Cover the entire table surface with sheets of paper for a very large play area. Clean up the moon sand by picking it up and forming a ball. Roll it along the surface until the crumbs incorporate into the ball. Remove the paper and crumble up, taking care to catch any of the remaining sand within.

• To turn moon sand into a permanent sculpture, bake it in the oven at 250 degrees for 30 minutes. Let the moon sand sit in the oven until back at room temperature. Remove it; the sand is now permanently stuck together.
