How to Clear My Old MacBook

MacBooks run the Apple Mac OS X operating system. After the MacBook has been used for a while, it begins to accumulate personal and system files. Like any other computer system, the more files it accumulates, the slower it operates. Clearing the hard drive alleviates this problem by forcing the operating system to be reinstalled. You can clear your old MacBook by formatting the internal hard drive, which erases all personal files.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the Mac OS X installation disc into the disc drive, then restart the MacBook.

    • 2

Press and hold the "C" key until the MacBook begins to boot from the disc.

    • 3

      Click the "Next" arrow.

    • 4

Click the "Utilities" menu at the top of the screen, then click "Disk Utility."

    • 5

Click the MacBook's internal hard drive in the left column.

    • 6

      Click the "Partition" tab.

    • 7

Click "1 Partition" under "Volume Scheme."

    • 8

Click "Apply," then click "Partition." The MacBook is completely cleared.

Tips & Warnings

  • An operating system, such as Mac OS X, must be installed on the MacBook after it has been cleared for it to be usable again.

  • This process erases all existing data on the hard drive. Be sure to have a backup of important data, such as documents and pictures, before proceeding.
