Outline the deer with a dark brown or burnt sienna ink pen.

Many types of deer are commonly found across North America. Drawing the outline of a deer is a great way to make a logo, template or even a tattoo. Getting the proportions correct is the hardest part, but as long as you have a good eraser handy you'll be able to perfect the deer.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn your paper vertically. Draw a vertical and horizontal line across the page, splitting it into quarters. Label the quadrants q1 in the top left, q2 in the top right, q3 bottom left and q4 in the bottom right.

    • 2

Draw a short horizontal line in the center of q1. Continue the line with a sharp curve down then slightly curving to the left until you reach the halfway point between the left side of the page and the vertical center line.

    • 3

Continue the line down into q3 moving diagonally down toward the vertical center line. Make a sharp curve to the right when you've gone a quarter of the way into q3.

    • 4

Cross the vertical center line with a horizontal line that moves slightly upward; ending halfway into q4. Sharply turn the line up towards the horizontal center line and stop the line when you meet it. This is the baseline of the deer.

    • 5

Draw a short diagonal line from the start of of the baseline in q1 and extending up and to the left. Draw another short diagonal line towards the top-center of the page. Stop the line when you've gone half the distance of the short horizontal line in Step 2.

    • 6

Continue the line by curving it up and then leveling the line off. Curve the line downward, following the curve of the baseline, just before you meet the vertical center line.

    • 7

Make a 90-degree curve toward the right when the line is a quarter of the way above the horizontal center line. Continue the line horizontally into q2, end the line with a downward curve when it is directly above where the baseline stopped.

    • 8

Connect the top line and the baseline with two, quarter-circle lines that curve to the right and the up. Start at the end of the baseline and the end top line with the quarter-circles meeting in a point.

    • 9

Draw a small almond shape inside of the head where the top line curves inward slightly.

    • 10

Make a leaf shape on the top of the head where the line starts to curve down. Erase the line that separates the leaf from the top line and smooth the edges. Draw another leaf shape starting to the left of the first one and ending when it reaches the left edge of the first leaf.

    • 11

Start the back leg a quarter of the way to the right of the vertical center line and starting on the horizontal center line. Draw it down into the q4 and curving towards the left side of the page. When the line extends below the base line, change the curve towards the right side of the page. Stop the line before the end of the page.

    • 12

Draw a curved line from the bottom right corner of the baseline, down and to the right. Sharply turn the line down towards the bottom of the page, parallel to the first line of the leg. Connect the end of the lines with a short horizontal line.

    • 13

Erase the baseline inside the leg shape. Start the next line along the baseline and just inside of the q4. Draw parallel to the the front line of the leg, ending where the first leg ends. Draw a line parallel to the back line of the leg starting in the upper middle of the front leg line. Close the end of the two lines with a horizontal line.

    • 14

Draw a vertical line that starts along the baseline in q3 and is a quarter of the way to the left of the vertical center line. End the line where the other two legs end.

    • 15

Draw a line that starts inside of the baseline in q3, curving down and to the right, crossing the point that the line in Step 14 starts. Move the line out diagonally to the center of q3. Make a sharp 90 angle change and continue the line diagonally toward the middle. End the line until it is a quarter of the way above the end of the other legs.

    • 16

Start the next line inside of the baseline and close to the horizontal center line. Bring the line down outside of the baseline, slightly curving to the the left until it is even with the horizontal part of the baseline. Continue the line by drawing it parallel to the line in Step 15, and connect the end of the lines with a short diagonal.

    • 17

Draw a line parallel to the one in Step 14, starting on the upper right side of the front leg. Connect the end of the lines with a short horizontal.

    • 18

Erase the baseline inside the front leg shape. Erase the horizontal and vertical center lines. Smooth all of the edges and adjust the proportions for a thinner or stalkier deer. Outline in ink.

Tips & Warnings

  • Vary the thickness of the ink lines for a more dynamic deer outline.
