How to Find a Google API Key

Google opens many of its Web-based services up for programmers to access through standalone applications. For example, the Page Speed service allows a programmer to create an application that checks the loading time of a website without browsing to the Google Page Speed website. Google limits the amount of times per day that a person can freely access these services, however, and each person must sign up for his own API key. This alphanumeric code tracks the usage of a Google service back to you and ensures that you adhere to Google's terms of use.

Instructions

    • 1

Open a Web browser and navigate to code.google.com. Log into your Google account if prompted.

    • 2

Click the "APIs Console" link under "Developer Resources" on the left side of the page. This page displays all of the Google services that you have subscribed to. If you have no active services, click the "Off" switch next to the name of the service to change it to "On." You must agree to Google's usage terms for that service before you can use it.

    • 3

Click "API Access" on the left side of the page.

    • 4

Copy the alphanumeric code next to "API Key." Enter this code in an application that makes use of a Google Web service to make the application function.
