How to Delete VMware Virtual OS

VMware's virtualization programs create virtual machines on your computer that run virtual operating systems in a window on the computer. Each virtual operating system has its own virtual machine, which consists of a directory containing configuration files and a large virtual hard disk image file that represents the virtual machine's hard drive. You can delete a virtual operating system in VMware by deleting the virtual machine. Each virtual machine is self-contained, so deleting one won't effect your other virtual operating systems. You can delete only virtual machines that aren't in use by VMware; make sure they're shut down first if the "Delete" option appears grayed out.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can press and hold the "Ctrl" key, click the "Trash" icon and click "Empty Trash" on Mac OS X to remove the virtual machine's files from your system.

  • Deleting a virtual machine is permanent: you won't be able to recover the virtual machine and its files unless you restore it from the Trash on Mac OS X. VMware deletes the virtual machine without sending it to the Recycle Bin on Windows.
