How to Draw the Pumpkin King

Draw the beloved character Jack Skellington -- otherwise known as The Pumpkin King -- from the film "The Nightmare Before Christmas." Create a simple black-and-white drawing of Jack to frame and decorate your home or office. Jack is a whimsical and unique character to draw, with his exaggerated features -- an oversized head, a smiling expression and a tall, thin frame. By understanding the proportions of Jack's body, you will be able to create your own masterpiece of the king of Halloweentown.

Instructions

    • 1

Refer to a photo of Jack Skellington, and create a light sketch of the basic shape and posture of Jack's head and torso on paper with a pencil. Keep in mind that Jack's head is much larger in proportion to his tall and thin body. Sketch a circle for his head, and then sketch an oval about the same size for his torso. Draw his confident posture, with his chest area curved forward from the rest of his body.

    • 2

Sketch lines to represent his long arms and legs; a quick sketch of simple lines will help you get the right sizing and proportion of the body parts before refining the drawing. Make the legs about three times longer than the torso. To determine the length of his arms, line up the elbows with the lower half of the torso. Draw ovals to represent the hands and feet.

    • 3

Refine your original sketch by adding details that are more accurate. Draw an outline of his skeletal body shape and his thin arms and legs. Draw pointy, long skeletal hands, adding small lines to detail the joints of the fingers. Erase your original sketch marks.

    • 4

Draw the details of his costume, starting with the rounded, V-shaped neckline. Then draw the three-pointed, bat-winged collar. Make the tail of his jacket with jagged pointed edges. Sketch the lines of the stripes in his suit, creating vertical lines in the front of the jacket and down the sleeves and the front of the pants. Color every other stripe with black to create the pin-striped suit. Draw a pair of small-heeled boots for his feet.

    • 5

Study the proportions of Jack's facial features and sketch the eyes, nose and mouth. Sketch the oversized oval, sunken skeleton eyes, noting that they are almost half the height of his face. Draw two small oval-shaped nostrils right below and between his eyes. Draw the mouth as a thin and rounded half-moon shape, extending to the center edges of the head. Sketch the notched stitching over the mouth.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use pen and ink to fill in the black areas of the drawing. Alternatively, create the drawing on painting canvas instead of paper and paint the drawing with black acrylic paint.

  • Paint a solid-colored background, such as a red, purple or dark blue, for dramatic contrast.
