How to Fix Split Ends to Get Hair to Grow Long

Trim hair regularly to fix split ends.

Split ends occur when the hair cuticle is stripped of its natural, moisturizing oils, causing the ends of the hair to become frayed. This stripping of moisturizing oils is due to excessive brushing and over use of heat styling tools. To fix this, the hair is trimmed regularly, treated with a conditioner and dried with a ceramic blow dryer set on cool.

Things You'll Need

• Scissors
• Leave-in conditioner
• Vented styling brush
• Ceramic hair dryer

Instructions

1. Fix split ends by trimming hair. Take small sections of hair and twist them into a downward motion to allow the split ends to stick out. Snip into the twist with scissors to remove dried cuticles. Regular trimming allows the hair to grow.

2. Apply a leave-in conditioner on split ends to moisturize the hair cuticles and prevent splitting.

3. Brush with a vented styling brush when using a ceramic hair dryer on a cool setting to prevent damage to hair cuticles, since excessive brushing and blow-drying hair on a hot setting causes split ends. Also avoid hot rollers, electric curlers and flat irons, which concentrate intense heat on the hair, sapping its moisture. Instead, dry hair naturally.

Tips & Warnings

• Refrain from using chemical salon treatments, since they dry hair ends, causing them to split. These treatments include perms, relaxers and hair bleach.
