How to Draw a Simple School Building

Drawing a simple school building is a suitable exercise for sketch artists. Such a project requires them to harness their understanding and ability to draw simple shapes and put shapes together to represent a more complex structure. A benefit of this exercise is that it doesn't require sketch artists to do complex shading or represent difficult angles. It's also a suitable project for children, particularly those who don't like school, as it allows them to create a version of a school that they might like better or express angry feelings about their school.

  • Draw a rectangle of any size you like; this will be the approximate size of the school. The longest side of the rectangle will be the horizontal end of it. At the top end of the rectangle, draw a long skinny rectangle directly on it, one which is just a fraction of an inch wide and slightly longer than the rectangle.

  • Draw a small rectangle, just a fraction of the entire size of your large rectangle, at the bottom center of the main rectangle. Draw a vertical line through this little rectangle. These will represent the double doors of the school.

  • Draw perfect squares one after the over in horizontal rows, filling up the entirety of the remaining space of the rectangle. These will act as the windows of the school. When you draw your subsequent rows of squares, make sure they all line up as perfectly as possible. Use a ruler to help you.

  • Add details such as doorknobs to the double doors, or an American flag flying off the roof of the school. If you want, you can draw windowpanes for each window and even window frames.
