How to IM on Hotmail

When you use Hotmail, you not only get access to a fully functional email client, but you can also utilize instant messaging capability. Although you can log into Windows Live Messenger with your Hotmail ID, Hotmail allows you to chat with your contacts without even having the Windows Live software on your computer. With this functionality, you can chat with your friends from any computer simply by logging into Hotmail in your Web browser.

      Sign up for a Hotmail account ID at Hotmail.com. You will need to fill out the form with your basic personal information such as your name, state, ZIP code, country and birth year. You will also enter your desired user name and password. Login to your account at the Hotmail home page. Once you login, you should be able to see your email inbox.

      Add contacts to your messaging account. In the top-left corner, you will see a section that says "Contacts." When you hold your mouse over this section, a drop-down menu comes up on the screen. Click on a link that says "Add Contacts." You will be given the opportunity to enter email addresses of people who are already on Hotmail Messenger. When you click "Add," this person will be given the opportunity to accept or decline your invitation. If he accepts, he will become one of your contacts.

      Communicate with your contacts on Hotmail messenger. Once you have some contacts, you can simply click on them and a chat box will appear on the bottom of the screen. You can type messages into the text box and hit enter to send them. When sending instant messages, you can also send emoticons and other animations. With this functionality, you can talk to any of your Windows Live Messenger contacts through your email screen without logging into the Messenger software.
