How to Disassamble a HP Pavilion dv6
The dv6 is a line of laptops manufactured by Hewlett-Packard. During the life of your laptop, you may have to perform repairs or general maintenance from time to time. Fortunately, HP kept the average user in mind while designing dv6 laptops. Many repairs and upgrades can be performed with little technical knowledge. Whether you're replacing hardware or performing general laptop maintenance, you must be able to dismantle the computer.

Turn off the laptop, unplug the power cable and any external devices. Close the LCD panel and place the laptop facedown on a flat surface. Rotate the computer so the front panel is facing you. Slide the battery release button to the left, and remove the battery pack from its compartment in the upper-right corner of the laptop's bottom case.

Loosen the two Phillips-head screws on the hard-drive compartment cover in the upper-left corner of the laptop. Remove the cover, grasp the hard drive's protruding pull tab and lift the drive straight up and out of the compartment.

Remove the single Phillips-head screw fastening the CD/DVD drive to its compartment in the lower-left corner of the laptop. Insert a paper clip or similar tool into the release hole on the face of the drive. Push the paper clip into the hole until the drive ejects from its compartment. Pull the drive out of the laptop.

Locate the wireless card inside the empty hard-drive compartment. Unplug the two antenna cables from the card. Spread apart its retention clips, tilt the card upward at an angle and remove the card from its socket.

Remove the four Phillips-head screws from the large memory-module compartment cover near the center of the laptop's bottom case. Lift the cover off of the laptop to reveal the memory modules. Spread apart the retention clips on either side of each memory module. Tilt each module upward at an angle, and pull the modules from their individual memory sockets.

Remove all remaining Phillips screws from the laptop's bottom case. This includes any screws located inside the empty battery pack and hard-drive compartments. Flip the laptop over and open the LCD panel as far as possible.

Grasp the rear edge of the keyboard's switch cover. This is the plastic piece situated above the keyboard assembly. Tilt the switch cover upward at an angle until it completely detaches from the laptop case. Slide the switch cover back so it rests on the LCD screen's surface.

Remove the three Phillips-head screws fastening the keyboard in place. Lift upward on the rear edge of the keyboard until you can access its large ribbon cable. Unplug the ribbon cable from the motherboard. Remove the keyboard from the laptop and set it aside.

Disconnect the two ribbon cables extending from the switch cover to the motherboard. Remove the switch cover from the laptop. Locate the wireless antenna cables extending from the right side of the display panel. Pull the cables through the small holes in the laptop's top case.

Disconnect the main LCD video cable extending from the left side of the display panel to the motherboard. Remove the two Phillips-head screws from each display hinge. Lift the display panel off of the laptop's base. Set the panel aside on a flat surface with the screen facing upward to avoid any scratching.

Unplug all visible cables from the motherboard through the access holes in the top case. Loosen the five remaining Phillips-head screws fastening the top case to the base of the laptop. Grasp each side of the top case and lift it straight up and off the laptop to reveal the top side of the motherboard.

Tips & Warnings
Store all removed hardware components in static-free plastic bags to avoid electrical damage. This includes the hard drive, CD/DVD drive, wireless card and RAM modules.
Always wear an electrostatic discharge strap while dismantling your laptop. This will prevent major electrical damage to the motherboard.
