How to Turn Off DHCP on Your PS3

Save

DHCP means Dynamic Host Control Protocol. For any two devices to communicate with each other on a network, their communication has to be governed by a set of parameters that includes IP addresses. The PS3's DHCP technology configures these parameters automatically, but at some point you may require your own manual settings -- for example, if the PS3's DHCP system fails to work, or you need a static IP address to access the PlayStation network.

Things You'll Need

  • PS3 Controller or remote
  • Turn the console on and wait for it to boot up. Once it's ready, select "Network Settings" under the "Settings" tab in the main menu.

  • Choose "Internet Connection Settings." If you have an active Internet connection, at this point you will receive a prompt telling you that you will be disconnected. Choose "Yes" to disconnect.

  • Choose either "Custom" or "Easy" at the next page. "Custom" allows you to configure your own settings rather than using the default. Inexperienced users should avoid using the "Custom" setting.

  • Select either "Wireless" or "Wired," depending on the type of connection you have. The procedure remains the same for either choice.

  • Select "Auto-Detect" operation mode to arrive at the "IP Address" setting. You now have the following options: "Automatic" means the DHCP server will determine addressing information for your console; "Manual" means DHCP is disabled and you must enter the information yourself. The last, "PPPoE" allows you to use a PPPoE connection, a network layer protocol that allows you to establish a secure point to point connection between your console and another.

  • Choose "Manual" and enter your settings as follows:

"IP Address:" enter your static IP address. Consult your Internet provider for your static IP address.

    "Subnet mask:" 255.255.255.0

    "MTU:" Automatic

    "Proxy Server:" Do Not Use

"UPnP:" Enable if you have a router that supports UPnP. Otherwise, Disable.

  • Press the "X" button to save the changes after you have finished inputting them.
