Facebook's chat feature allows you to engage in real-time conversations with your friends. If you're visiting Facebook for other reasons, such as playing games or updating your status, you may not with to speak with anyone. Rather than ignoring your friends' messages or chatting when you don't want to, change your settings so that no one can see you're logged on. Make yourself invisible on Facebook chat by setting your status to offline.
Sign in to Facebook.
Click the gray "Chat" box at the bottom of the screen. This opens the Chat window.
Click "Options" in the Chat window.
Click "Go Offline" in the drop-down Options menu. Once you're offline, you're invisible to anyone else who's logged in.
Tips & Warnings
- You can make yourself appear invisible to specific groups of people by using friend lists. To do this, open the chat window and click the status bar next to a list. While you'll appear offline to the people on that list, you'll remain visible to everyone else.
- Create friend lists though your Facebook Friends page. You'll find the option there to start a new list.
