How to Save a PNG

The Portable Network Graphics (PNG) file format is an alternative to other image formats such as JPEG, BMP and GIF. It was originally designed as a superior replacement, in terms of image quality, for the GIF format. If you want to save an image file, such as a JPEG or BMP, as a PNG file, you can use Microsoft Windows Paint. Paint can save a file as PNG, regardless of its existing format.

  • Locate the image file you want to save as a PNG file.

  • Right-click the image file, click "Open with," then click "Paint." This will open the image file in Microsoft Windows Paint.

  • Click the "File" menu, which is at the top of the Paint window, to the left of the "Home" tab. Move down to the "Save as" option and select "PNG" from the pop-up menu. This will open the "Save As" dialog box.

  • Enter a file name for the PNG file and choose a location in which to save the it. If you clicked "PNG" in the previous step, the file type will already be set to PNG in this window. If not, select "PNG" from the "Save as type" drop-down menu.
