How to Set Up My 1200 Watt Xplod Amplifier With 2-12 Inch Subwoofers

The Sony XM-2200GTX car amplifier boasts peak power output of 1200 watts -- plenty of power for driving a pair of 12-inch subwoofers. Thanks to the amplifier's two-channel configuration, setting the amplifier up with the subwoofers is easy and requires only a few simple tools.

Things You'll Need

  • Speaker wire
  • Wire cutters/strippers
  • Screwdriver
  • Lay out a length of speaker wire between your first subwoofer and the amplifier's speaker terminals, located on the amplifier's side panel. Cut the length of speaker wire with a set of wire cutters/strippers. Pull apart the two leads on each end of the speaker wire and remove 1/2 inch of each lead's jacket with the wire cutters/strippers.

  • Loosen the two screw terminals marked Speaker R+ and Speaker R- on the amplifier's side panel. Slide the bare ends of the leads into the terminals and tighten the screws with the screwdriver to hold the wires. Note which lead goes into the R+ terminal -- speaker wire leads are color-coded or otherwise distinguished, one from the other.

  • Push down the red and the black terminals on the back of the first subwoofer and insert the bare ends of the leads on the other end of the speaker wire. Match the lead that was in the R+ terminal with the red terminal.

  • Connect the other subwoofer in the same way, using the amplifier's Speaker L+ and L- terminals for the second subwoofer.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use thick speaker wire, 12- to 14-gauge, for the best results.
