How to Make Stuffed Animal Eyes From Felt

Stuffed animals can be cherished objects to young children, but sometimes they begin to show wear and tear due to this love. Whether you're making new eyes to replace missing ones or creating eyes for a handmade stuffed animal, felt is an easy material to work with. With so many available color choices, you can come up with some distinctive looking eyes.

Things You'll Need

  • Piece of cardboard
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Fabric glue
  • Create a cardboard template for both the eye white and pupil. Draw the desired shape of the eye white area onto the cardboard. Ovals and circles are traditional eye shapes but you can also use diamonds or triangles for distinctive features. Draw the shape of the pupil, making sure it's smaller in size than the eye white. Cut out both shapes.

  • Place the cardboard outline of the eye white onto one color of felt and trace around it with tailor's chalk. Repeat for the other eye.

  • Use a separate color of felt to create the pupil. Place the template onto the felt and trace twice.

  • Cut out the two eye whites and pupils from the felt with scissors, using the chalk outline as a guide.

  • Apply dots of fabric glue to the back of the pupils and press into place on the eye whites. Attach to the stuffed animals with the fabric glue.

Tips & Warnings

  • Sewing the pupil to the eye white provides an alternative to fabric glue. Use a basic backstitch in a similar color thread to your felt.
