How to Find the Line Over the Letter N on a Laptop Keyboard

Save

The letter "N" with a line over it, more commonly called a tilde, is a letter from the Spanish alphabet, so you may need it in order to type proper Spanish on your keyboard. Most keyboards that weren't designed specifically for Spanish speakers don't include a dedicated "ñ" key; however, Windows has a dedicated series of keys that you press at the same time to create the "ñ" letter.

  • Open the program in which you want to type the letter "n" with a line over it. For example, open WordPad if you need to type a letter in Spanish.

  • Identify the function letter keys if your keyboard doesn't have a dedicated number keypad; the function number keys are located on the letter keys "M," "J," "K," "L," "U," "I" and "O," and the symbols ")," "(," "*" and "&."

  • Press the "Alt" key and type "164" on the keyboard number keypad, or press both the "Fn" and "Alt" keys and type "JOU." The "n" with a tilde over it appears when you release the keys. To type a capitalized "N" key with a line over it, type "0209" on the keypad instead, or "MKM(" using the function keypad.
