How to Share an iTunes Library Between Two Computers

Save

With the release of iTunes 9, Apple introduced the Home Sharing feature that allows iTunes users to share their iTunes library between multiple computers. As long as two computers are on the same network, sharing an iTunes library is as simple as turning on the Home Sharing setting and either streaming the iTunes files to a second computer or dragging the files over to the second computer.

  • Double-click the iTunes application icon on the computer that contains the iTunes library that you want to share to launch the application.

  • Click the "Advanced" tab and select the "Turn on Home Sharing" option to activate the feature. Type your Apple ID and password in the spaces provided and click the "Create Home Share" button.

  • Double-click the iTunes application icon on the second computer to launch the application. Click the "Advanced" tab and select the "Turn onHome Sharing" option. Type the same Apple ID and password you used in Step 2 in the spaces provided and click the "Create Home Share" button.

  • Click on the computer that contains the library you want to share beneath the "Sharing" heading in the iTunes application window on the second computer. You can now browse through and listen to all of the music files saved in the iTunes library. If you would like to add the files from the first computer to the second computer's library, click on the files and drag them onto the "Library" heading in the second computer's iTunes application window.
