Microsoft Excel does not have a generic ROOT function which returns the nth root of a number. Nevertheless, you can still use Excel to perform calculations that require you to extract roots. In general mathematics, you can obtain the root of a number by raising it to the power of a fraction. For example, raising 4 to the power of 1/2 will give you its square root, which is 2. With this in mind, you can use Excel's basic math operators or the POWER function to compute for the nth root of a number.
Launch Excel. Create a new workbook, or open the file that you'd like to work on.
Select the cell where you'd like to insert the nth root. Press "F2" to edit it.
Enter one of the formulas below into the cell. Replace "x" with the number from which you'd like to extract the root. You may use a cell reference, name, or another formula in place of "x."
Replace "n" with the root you'd like to obtain. For example, replace it with 3 if you'd like to get the cube root, or use 2 if you'd like to obtain the square root. Press "Enter" to see the result of your formula.
Tips & Warnings
- Excel comes with a SQRT function that takes any number and returns its square root. To use it, enter "=SQRT(n)" into an empty cell and then replace "n" with a number, a cell reference, or another formula.
