LIT files are Microsoft files written for the company’s Microsoft Reader. Unfortunately, Microsoft Reader is not available for Mac computers. If you have received a LIT file from a Windows user, you will need another type of software to read it. There are several options available for Mac users, each with advantages and disadvantages.
Things You'll Need
- Stanza / Calibre / Lit2HTML
Read LIT files with Stanza. (See Resources.) This free e-reader is popular on the iPad and iPod Touch, but also offers a Mac desktop version. It reads LIT files easily, but takes up a good deal of space on your computer (100 MB). If you plan on reading multiple LIT files, it might worth it though.
Read LIT files with Calibre. (See Resources.) This program works much like Stanza and is slightly smaller. It features an attractive interface, an easy-to-use set of options and LIT compatibility. As of this publication, though, it is still in beta form, so it’s possible you’ll discover unforeseen bugs. It has gone through seven prior beta tests so far, so you may not experience any problems at all.
Read LIT files with Lit2HTML. (See Resources.) This is a far more basic program than the others, allowing you to convert the LIT file to an HTML file you can read anywhere. If you want to read the file on another computer or transfer it to someone else who might also have problems with LIT files, this will solve the problem once and for all. You can then read the HTML file in any Web browser.
