How to Import Contacts into Outlook 2010 in a CSV File

Save

Microsoft Outlook email and personal information management software can import data from text files, including comma separated values, or CSV, format files. CSV files are often used to store data exported from contact management and address book software so that you can transfer contact information between programs. To import a CSV contact data file into Microsoft Outlook 2010, access the program's "Advanced Options" menu and use the "Import" option in the Export section.

  • Launch Microsoft Outlook 2010. Click the "File" tab from the program menu, and then select "Options."

  • Select "Advanced" in the left navigation pane.

  • Find the Export section, and click the "Export" button.

  • Click "Import From Another Program or File" in the Choose an Action to Perform list. Click "Next."

  • Click "Comma-Separated Values .csv" from the Select File Type to Import list. Click "Next."

  • Click "Browse" to locate the correct CSV files on your computer. Click the file to highlight it, and then click "Next."

  • Find the Select Destination Folder list, and click the Outlook folder into which you want to import the list. For example, this might be your main Contacts folder if you're importing contact data from another program. Click "Next." Click "OK" to confirm your choice of destination folder.

  • Click "Finish" to import the data from the CSV file into Outlook.

Tips & Warnings

  • Microsoft Outlook can also import contact information in tab separated values, or TSV, files. Use the same process, but select the file with a .tsv extension to import the data.
