How to Switch iTunes Accounts for the iPad

When you share your iPad with other users, such as a parent or sibling, it helps to create an individual iTunes Store account for each one. This will give each user the freedom to download items from the iTunes or App stores using his or her Apple ID and password. By default, your iPad will be logged into the account that was active on the iTunes Store the last time you synced your device. But you can easily switch between store accounts using your iPad's Store setting, App Store app or iTunes app.

Store Setting

  • Tap "Settings" on your home screen. You'll see a navigation pane on the left and a main pane on the right.

  • Tap "Store" on the left pane. The main pane will show an "Apple ID" button with a specific iTunes store account ID.

  • Tap the "Apple ID" button and select "Sign Out." The button will now read "Sign In."

  • Tap the "Sign In" button. Select "Use Existing Apple ID" and then type in the alternative Apple ID and password in the pop-up dialog box.

  • Tap "OK." The "Apple ID" button will now display a different iTunes Store account ID, indicating that you have successfully switched to another iTunes Store account

App Store or iTunes Apps

  • Tap "App Store" or "iTunes" on your home screen to launch it.

  • Tap the "Featured" or "Top Charts" icon at the bottom of the "App Store" app screen. Alternatively, tap any icon except "Ping" or "Downloads" at the bottom of the iTunes app screen.

  • Scroll to the bottom of the App Store or iTunes showcase. Tap the "Account" button on the lower left and then tap "Sign Out" on the pop-up dialog box.

  • Scroll again to the bottom of the screen. Tap the "Sign In" button on the left and then tap "Use Existing Apple ID" from the pop-up window.

  • Enter the Apple ID and password of a different iTunes Store account. Then click "OK" to sign in with the new account.

Tips & Warnings

  • Your iPad only uses one account at a time. Switching to another account using your iPad's Store setting will automatically activate the same account on the iTunes or Apps Store apps, and vice versa.
  • You can also create a new iTunes Store account. Instead of selecting an existing account, tap "Create New Store Account" and then follow the onscreen prompts.
