How to Add a Graphic File in Word 2007

Save

Although not absolutely necessary, graphics can make documents more engaging and much easier to understand. Microsoft Word 2007 lets you insert graphic files as either pictures or clip art. The main difference between the two methods lies in where you get the files from and how you insert them in a document. Both picture and clip art insertions may contain photos and drawings. You can edit these inserted images with Word's picture tools.

Insert Picture

  • Click the document area where you want the picture to appear.

  • Click the "Insert" tab on the Word 2007 Ribbon (toolbar).

  • Click "Picture" in the "Illustrations" group.

  • Use the navigation tools in the "Insert Picture" dialog box to locate and select the picture you want to insert. Double-click the file or click "Insert." Word 2007 closes the box and displays the picture in the current document.

  • Click the picture to select it. Press "Shift" and drag one of the control handles to re-size the picture if needed. To keep the center of the picture in place as the picture changes in size, press the "Ctrl" key as you adjust the size.

Insert Clip Art

  • Click in the Word document where you want to insert the clip art.

  • Click the "Insert" tab. Click "Clip Art" in the "Illustrations" group to open the "Clip Art" pane.

  • Enter a keyword or phrase in the "Clip Art" search bar. The keyword should describe the clip art you are searching for, such as "rose" or "tree."

  • Click the "Search in" drop-down button and choose the clip art collections you want Word 2007 to search in. You can leave it "All collections" if you want it to search all available resources.

  • Click the "Results should be" drop-down button and set the file types you want to see in the results. For instance, you can tell Word 2007 to limit the results to JPEG files only.

  • Click "Go." When Word 2007 completes the search process, it will display thumbnails of the images found.

  • Double-click the thumbnail of the clip art you want to use. This inserts the image into the document.

Tips & Warnings

  • You may notice a control handle over the top of a picture when you select it. Click and drag it if you want to rotate the picture.
  • Verify that you are connected to the Internet when searching for clip art. If your search returns no results, try modifying your keywords.
  • If you see a clip art you want to save to your computer, click its thumbnail once in the search results. Click "Make available offline."
