How to Set Up Linksys for Wireless
A Linksys wireless access point provides a wireless network to connect computers with each other and, through the access point, with other networks such as the Internet. Access points also include routing capabilities. The configuration of the access point determines all wireless network characteristics such as access restrictions for clients, security options and the nature of the connection to wired, external networks. You can configure a Linksys wireless access point for the specific needs of your wireless network.

1
Turn on the wireless access point. Connect the "WAN" port on the back panel to the connection provided by your Internet Service Provider (ISP), using an Ethernet cable. You can still have a wireless network without a wired connection to an ISP or to another network, but it will only allow the computers on the wireless network to communicate with each other.

2
Connect the computer to a numbered port (ports typically labeled "1" through "4") on the back panel of the Linksys router, using the other Ethernet cable.

3
Launch a Web browser on the computer, then navigate to the Web address where the router runs its own configuration utility. This address depends on the router and can be found in its documentation. For example, the default address for the Linksys WRT54GS is "192.168.1.1." The Web browser will display the main menu of the configuration utility.
