How to Reboot a Computer From Scratch

A computer uses memory chips to hold data and run programs. Electronic errors can develop in the memory chips, resulting in corrupt data. You can remove the problem files and reboot the computer to restore its operation back to optimal efficiency. The procedure to reboot a computer is straightforward and does not rely on pressing the power button. No software program must be purchased or downloaded to activate a reboot.

  • Click "Start" and "Run." Let the "Run" pop-up window appear on the screen before continuing. Enter "msconfig", without the quotes, into the text field in the window. Press the "Okay" button.

  • Press the "General" tab at the top of the window that appears. Click the "Normal Startup" button in the window.

  • Click the "Launch System Restore" button near the bottom of the window. Select the "Restore My Computer To An Earlier Time" button in the new window that appears. Click the "Next" button near the bottom of the window.

  • Select a date from the calendar displayed in a new window from when your computer ran optimally. Click the "Next" button. Follow the rest of the prompts in the new windows that appear to initiate the restore process. Click the "Reboot" button on the window when it appears to reboot the computer.
