How to Reset a Lost iPod Password

The iPod Classic and iPod Nano both include the ability for users to set a four-digit password and then lock the device's screen with it. This way, other people cannot access the content on the iPod if it is stolen or lost. If you forget your iPod's password while the screen is locked, you will need to connect it to your primary computer, manually reset the password and then choose a new one.

Things You'll Need

  • IPod Classic or Nano
  • IPod USB cable
  • ITunes 10 or later
  • Mac or PC computer
  • Plug your iPod into your primary Mac or PC computer using an iPod USB cable. The primary computer is the one that you have previously used to sync your iPod.

  • Open the iTunes program.

  • Wait for the iPod icon to appear on the left side of the window and then click on the eject symbol.

  • Disconnect your iPod from the computer. The device will now be temporarily unlocked to give you time to reset the password combination.

  • Use the click-wheel to navigate to the "Extras" section of the iPod menu.

  • Go to the "Screen Lock" section and then choose the "Reset Combination" option to erase the previous password and create a new one.

  • Use the click-wheel to enter a new four-digit password and then press the center button on the iPod to save the password.
