How to Access a Mac Mini From a PC


Apple computers running the Mac OS X operating system, such as the Mac Mini, use the Apple Filing Protocol (AFP) natively to communicate over a network with other Apple computers. Computers running Mac OS X can also use the Server Message Block (SMB) protocol, which is what computers running Microsoft Windows use to communicate with each other. You can access a Mac Mini computer from a PC by configuring the Mac Mini for Windows SMB-based file sharing.

Configure the Mac Mini

  • Click the "System Preferences" icon in the Dock.

  • Click "Sharing."

  • Click to place a check mark next to "File Sharing."

  • Click "Options."

  • Click to place a check next to "Share files and folders using SMB (Windows)."

  • Click "Done."
