How to Hook Up a Washing Machine to a Sink

Hook up your washer to a kitchen sink for a temporary laundry solution.

Most washing machines can be connected to a kitchen sink as both a water supply and drainage. You might want to hook up your appliance this way if you are having plumbing work done in the laundry room, for example, or you move into a house or apartment without a dedicated hookup for a washer. The hoses are a standard size, so there's no need to worry about buying the wrong part.

Things You'll Need

• Faucet adapter
• Hose splitter
• Pliers
• Duct tape

Instructions

1. Slide the washing machine over to the sink so the back of the appliance faces the sink.

2. Unscrew the aerator from the end of the sink faucet.

3. Attach the faucet adapter to the end of the sink faucet, twisting by hand to tighten. Attach the hose splitter to the faucet adapter.

4. Connect the cold water hose on the back of the washer to the threaded connector on one side of the faucet adapter. Tighten with pliers. Note that the other side of the hose splitter should be used for releasing pressure in the supply hose before removing it from the sink.

5. Place the corrugated drain hose attached to the washer inside the sink so water can flow down the drain. Either push the hose into the drain, or tape the curved part of the hose to the edge of the sink with a length of duct tape to prevent the hose from popping out while draining water.

6. Plug in the washer's electrical cord. Adjust the faucet water controls for hot or cold water, depending on your wash cycle. You are now ready to wash clothes normally.

Tips & Warnings

• Remove the sink stopper from the drain before starting the washer. Otherwise, you are liable to flood the kitchen.
