How to Turn on the Microphone on a MacBook

If you want to record audio with your MacBook, a laptop computer made by Apple, you can use the built-in omnidirectional microphone. For example, when you are working on a song with the free GarageBand music-creation application that comes installed on every MacBook, you can sing and the microphone will record your voice for the song. Once you set up the microphone, it will automatically turn on whenever you use an application that uses audio, such as iChat, the free application that lets you make video calls over the Internet. You can easily activate the microphone on your MacBook.

  • Click the "Apple" logo from the Finder menu.

  • Click "System Preferences."

  • Click "Sound."

  • Click the "Internal Microphone" option under "Select a Device for Sound Input." The MacBook's microphone is now set to turn on whenever you launch an application that uses sound, such as GarageBand or iChat. The built-in microphone is located above the "Esc" key on the MacBook's keyboard.
